Suit Filed for Jones Act Captain Who Died After Shipboard Injury

Arnold & Itkin has filed suit in Marin County, California, on behalf of the state of a Jones Act seaman and ship’s captain who died after suffering a severe colon injury aboard a vessel that operated near the coast of North Carolina. The lawsuit names The Dutra Group, the vessel’s owner and operator, as the defendant.

The captain suffered his injury in April 2024 while working aboard the vessel. He was hospitalized in the aftermath, but he ultimately passed away from his injuries in November 2024. The lawsuit alleges negligence, unseaworthiness, and failure to pay maintenance and cure, claims that are meant to hold the vessel’s owner and operator accountable for the conditions and care that led to his death.
