The location is just one hour away from major cities like New Orleans, Lafayette, and Baton Rouge. This port, while not directly on it, lies close to the Gulf of Mexico, which is a huge producer of U.S. oil and gas. By using the Atchafalaya River, it saves transporters 342 miles round trip. Like most ports, the Port of Morgan City is home to various cargo terminals and facilities that utilize the port services. An important feature of these facilities is the docking. The Port of Morgan City has an 800-foot long dock on the Bayou Boeuf. This is very helpful to those who have container and bulk cargo vessels. The port facility also includes a large warehouse storage unit as well as plenty of yard storage, totaling about 19 acres.
