The LeadersIn Maritime Law

Greater Ouachita Parish Port

Louisiana is no stranger to the maritime industry. Thousands of Louisiana residents are employed in occupations in and around the offshore field. The state is home to a number of important ports that play a vital role in both the state and national economy. This is exactly why Arnold & Itkin takes such a great interest in the Louisiana maritime field. We understand that because there are so many offshore workers, there is a great need for legal representation on their behalf. Since 1998, the Greater Ouachita Parish Port has been home to seamen in several different occupations who work for various offshore companies. No matter the occupation, all seamen, harbor workers, and offshore workers have special protection under maritime law.

There are a number of unique, interesting qualities to this particular port, including:

  • The port itself is located on the west bank of the Ouachita River near West Monroe, Louisiana.
  • It is governed by a 7-member board of commissioners who serve for 6 year terms.
  • The main types of cargo that utilize this port are container vessels.
  • The inbound cargo is furniture, baby supplies, and fuel.
  • The outbound container ships usually carry things like paper, cotton, oil, aggregates, and steel.
  • The combined weight of all this cargo comes to a whopping 1.1 million tons annually.

Seemingly an odd mix of imports and exports, these types of cargo combine to show the variety of industries that utilize Greater Ouachita Parish Port. It is obvious why this port is so crucial to the local, state, and national economy.

Located in West Monroe, Louisiana

The location of the Greater Ouachita Parish Port is in West Monroe. Monroe is a city in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana and is also the parish seat. Don't get confused though—Monroe and West Monroe are actually two different cities. West Monroe is the sister city of Monroe. Also located in Ouachita Parish, it is home to about 13,000 people. The total area of the city is 8 square miles, but 3.14% of it is water. The Greater Ouachita Parish Port employs a total of 4 people, but many more offshore workers have dealings with the port consistently. Each different Louisiana port is equipped with different facilities depending on what that port is typically used for. Since this port typically sees cargo and container ships, you will see things like docks, cranes, and container storage areas here.
