On March 22, a barge and a 585-foot-long ship collided in the Texas City dike. At the time of the collision, the barge was carrying more than 920,000 gallons of oil. The incident caused the barge to partially sink and one of the tanks to spring a leak. It is estimated that 160,000 gallons of oil was spilled into the dike.
