The Port of Vicksburg

Maritime Lawyers Serve Mississippi Workers

The Port of Vicksburg is highly useful to businesses in the area that are looking to transport their materials. This port is almost exactly halfway between Memphis and New Orleans, right on the Mississippi River. Since the dawn of the 19th century, Port of Vicksburg has been an integral part of Mississippi industry. The port is operated and owned by Warren County, and it has received the award as one of the top ports in the United States for trip ton miles.

The tonnage per year has gotten as high as 900,000 tons. It takes thousands of employees to make this port function. There are 1,200 employees that work here, but that does not include truck drivers, ship crewmembers, or railroad personnel who transport goods to and from the port. The actual total is more like 4,000 employees.

Port of Vicksburg is located on 55 acres of land, but there are 600 more acres that have not yet even been developed. The development of this land could boost the Mississippi economy tremendously. Currently, there are 21 businesses operating here with plenty of space for growth.

The port has a 12-foot minimum depth that connects to Vicksburg Harbor. Services at the port include cranes for loading and unloading and 130,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space. This is a dangerous field to find employment in, but injuries can be avoided if everyone does their part to maintain safety. If you were injured, there may be someone to be held responsible, including employers or insurance companies.

About Vicksburg, Mississippi

This city is located in Warren County and is about 230 miles northwest of New Orleans, Louisiana. It is located between the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers. The population is around 26,000 people. The first settlers of this area were the French, but during the American Civil War, the Union Army won control over the area. There has always been heavy steamboat traffic in the area because of its location on the Mississippi River. Also, the railway crossing in this city is the only one between Baton Rouge and Memphis. If you are a resident of Vicksburg or a surrounding area, you likely know someone in the maritime industry or are in it yourself.
