The Port of Harlingen

The Port for Petroleum in South Texas

Unlike some of the Texas ports designed for large vessels such as the Port of Beaumont or Calhoun Port Authority, the Port of Harlingen is a shallow port designed for barges. With close proximity to transportation stations that go to important hubs like Corpus Christi and Great Lakes, this is an important port for industry in the region. In fact, did you know that this port imports 70% of refined petroleum? This is a huge contributor to what makes South Texas tick. The channel is 125 feet wide but only 12 feet deep. The port also comes equipped with more than 150 acres of sites made available to industrial firms that can greatly benefit from the location of the port.

The Port of Harlingen is also a vital component of what is known as the Rio Grande Valley. This valley is what composes the very southern tip of Texas and separates the United States from Mexico. It is named for the Rio Grande River that flows between the two. Cameron County is the region of the Rio Grande Valley that the Port of Harlingen lies in. The crops that grow in the valley are mainly cotton, sugarcane, and citrus. These commodities are transported by way of the Port of Harlingen. This port has facilities and equipment to support barges such as a wharf for bulk cargo, storage areas, rail services, and more.
