Rescue Launched for Crew Member After Fall on Container Ship

Earlier today a crew member aboard a container ship in east Harris County suffered a serious fall. The worker fell down into what is estimated to be a 60-foot hold. A hold is a space for carrying cargo, which may be covered up with a large hatch when cargo is in transport. Some newer ships have eliminated the hatch to decrease dead-weight, which can make the open hold a potential danger for crew members.

Rescue crews were quickly called to the scene on Industrial Road at around 10:30 a.m. The man’s condition is currently unknown, but he was reportedly immobilized from the steep fall. In a joint rescue effort, the Channelview Fire Department arrived at the scene of the incident to assist with getting the man out of the hold.

It is unclear how the incident occurred or whether the man has sustained serious injuries from the fall.
