Natchitoches Parish Port

The Structure and Locale of Natchitoches Port

This port is located on the Red River in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana which is in the Northwest region of the state. It covers a total of 700 acres and has immediate access to major highways such as LA Highways 6 and 486 as well as U.S. Highways 71 and 84. Another important feature that is necessary for ports is access to the other mode of transportation, the railroad. The Natchitoches Parish Port provides access to the Kansas City Southern Railroad, which is famous for taking cargo from ports and dispersing it to America's heartland. This railroad, founded in 1887, is one of the oldest rail companies still in operation. The Natchitoches Parish Port was established in 1975 by Louisiana Legislature to regulate commerce within that particular parish. Like many other Louisiana ports, the Louisiana Legislature recognized that it was a strategically important part of the state's commerce.

What is unique about this port is that its governing board is made up of two people appointed by the City of Natchitoches, two appointed by the city's police jury, and one is appointed directly by the Governor. This port primarily handles inbound cargoes of aggregate, forest products and coal while the outbound products typically take on the form of forest products and carbon. The overall tonnage that passes through the port is measured by barge, rail, and truck, totaling about 546,000 tons per year. This adds up to a gross revenue of $531,000 annually. This port has special facilities to support industry in the Natchitoches area. It comes equipped with a large warehouse, a concrete dock, loading facilities, a barging dock as well as conveyor equipment.

The History of Natchitoches, Louisiana

Natchitoches is the parish seat of Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. This is an old town rooted in French history. It was established in 1714 as a part of what was then French Louisiana. The French named this area after the Indian tribe that resided there. Interestingly, this town is the oldest settlement still left over from the Louisiana Purchase, when the United States purchased the state from the French. Another interesting fact about the town is that during the Civil War, the entire town was set aflame by the Union army. If it were not for the Confederates arriving in time to put out the fire, the city would have been completely burned. If this sounds familiar, it also happened to Alexandria.
