What is the Jones Act?

The Jones Act is to protect those people, who work offshore whether it's on fishing vessels, tankers, or otherwise in the offshore industry. The men and woman that work offshore have rights that certain people who work on land, don't. Namely, if they get hurt while at work they are allowed to file a claim against their employer. Because on land, you have essentially workers' comp for people that get hurt. With the Jones Act it works a little bit different. You are entitled to something called maintenance incur regardless of who's fault and what that means is, maintenance incur is to pay your medical bills and to pay certain daily wages and then if your employer did something wrong, anything wrong, you are entitled to sue your employer for negligence.
