Shell Expected to Begin Arctic Drilling this Year

After receiving conditional federal approval a month ago to begin six exploratory wells in the Arctic, Shell Oil Co. expects to begin drilling later this year in the Chukchi Sea after permits are obtained for their individual wells. In order to receive these permits, Shell must be able to prove that they have a solid plan for responding to spills or another type of offshore accident that may occur. With regards to the Deepwater Horizon spill from 2010, Shell has built their response plan and stated that they would be able to have every available responder in Alaska available within an hour's notice. They also have stated that they have the technological advances to perform an effective cleanup that would differ from the Gulf of Mexico just over a year ago. Many environmentalists disagree, though, stating that it is impossible to perform clean up in the "slushy" waters of the arctic.

The price of offshore accidents is often catastrophic and nearly unmanageable for the drilling company and victims.
