Shell Announces Budget for Nova Scotia Offshore Oil Exploration

Royal Dutch Shell PLC, commonly referred to simply as Shell, has announced that they will spend around $962 million on four offshore areas that are approximately 125 miles from the coast of Nova Scotia. On this budget, they plan on exploring for the next six years for oil deep below the surface of the ocean. According to reports, this is the largest budget that has been allotted for offshore drilling rights on the eastern coast of Canada, an underexplored area. Reports say that there has been no offshore drilling in these four areas purchased by Shell, and there is very limited data available for deepwater oil possibilities in the area. In this area, the seafloor is between 4,500 and 12,000 feet below the surface, which constitutes areas of very deep water in comparison to the 5,000 foot depth of the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf Coast.
While there have been new regulations and enforcements for safety put in place after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, this new, nearly uncharted area can pose a potential danger if not approached cautiously.
