Contrary to what many people think, piracy is not in the past as modern day piracy is still a huge problem for offshore workers. Modern day pirates are dangerous, usually boarding ships armed, and crewmembers are often taken hostage or harmed. Piracy has even increased in recent years, despite the efforts by governments and corporations to abate it. Just within the past week, piracy has been reported in India, Indonesia and Bangladesh.
A cargo ship off the coast of India was recently boarded by 10 pirates while anchored at the Kandla Anchorage. The pirates boarded the ship, stole ship stores, and exited the ship all unnoticed. In Indonesia, a chemical tanker was boarded while anchored at Dumai Inner Anchorage and pirates took a motorman hostage. An alarm was sounded when the robbers were noticed, but they escaped with some engine parts. Also in Indonesia, a tanker was boarded by four armed robbers. The robbers proceeded to tie up the engineer and steal the ship's stores. In all these cases, no injuries were reported.
Piracy has also been reported in Bangladesh recently. While anchored at Chittagong Outer Anchorage, pirates boarded the bulk carrier and stole ship stores. A watchman was on duty and heard movement on the deck, which is when he informed the duty officer. When they went to investigate and confront the robbers, they were attacked and the duty officer was injured.
