Shell, one of the largest energy companies in the world, is a global group of energy and petrochemicals companies with around 102,000 employees in more than 100 countries and territories. The exploration and production sector of the company, also known as upstream activities, is engaged in searching for oil and gas reserves, drilling wells, and extracting crude oil and natural gas to sell on international markets or use for refining. Other major companies that dominate the upstream market include Exxon Mobil, ConocoPhillips, Total, BP, and ChevronTexaco.

The Shell Exploration & Production Company is based in Houston, Texas, with key operating locations in the Gulf of Mexico, South Texas, Wyoming, and Alabama. More than 60% of Shell’s overall U.S. production is from the Gulf of Mexico, and parent company Royal Dutch Shell has had to shut down its flagship deep-water field, Perdido, in the Gulf of Mexico, because of the U.S. drilling moratorium on deep-water projects. Perdido’s shutdown, less than a month after it started production to great fanfare, illustrates the impact of the U.S. ban on deep-water drilling following the April 2010 blowout and oil spill.

Shell, along with ExxonMobil, Chevron Corporation, and ConocoPhillips, has prepared for deep-water oil spills up to 10,000 feet underwater in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. These companies will form a non-profit organization, the Marine Well Containment Company, which will operate the response system that will be used for any spills. All four companies rely heavily on offshore drilling, and Shell and Chevron both have significant operations in the Gulf of Mexico.

Parent company Royal Dutch Shell is a vertically integrated global company with operations in more than 140 countries. As a vertically integrated company, Shell has nearly total ownership and control from upstream operations to downstream buyers with direct access to customers through its retail gas stations.

Shell, in the Gulf of Mexico, will continue to play a vital role in the United States’ energy market for years to come with significant oil discoveries at Appomattox in 2010. At Appomattox, partners Shell (80%) and Nexen (20%) drilled an exploratory well and two appraisal sidetracks, and the well results have exceeded pre-drill expectations.

In the United States, the Shell Oil Company subsidiary, headquartered in Houston, Texas, is located at 910 Louisiana St., Houston, TX 77002.
