MacGregor Group

Name: MacGregor Group (Cargotec Corporation Marine)
Address: Sornaisten rantatie 23, PO Box 61, FI-00501 Helsinki, Finland
Phone: +358-204-554 299

The MacGregor Group, a subsidiary of Cargotec Corporation, provides marine cargo and offshore load-handling solutions for container ships, bulk carriers, general cargo ships, ro-ro ships, reefer ships, and passenger ships. MacGregor Group products include air conditioning chillers, cranes, shipboard elevators and escalators, hatch covers, galleys, refrigerated cargo handling systems, ro-ro equipment and cargo securing systems. The company’s main customers are ship owners, ship and port operators, and shipyards in the commercial marine and offshore industries.

MacGregor’s 2008 net sales totaled EUR 985 million. MacGregor employed 2,577 people at the end of December 2008. The Group operates in 50 major shipping and shipbuilding countries, and its service network consists of approximately 60 service stations.

In 2008, the MacGregor Group bought Platform Crane Services International, based in Slidell, Louisiana. Platform Crane Services specialized in the service, repair and maintenance of marine and offshore cranes with an emphasis on Gulf of Mexico installations. Olli Isotalo, president of MacGregor, was quoted in Cranes Magazine as stating that the acquisition “ideally supports our overall strategy of providing offshore service to global markets, but also to support the regional growth of the whole MacGregor Group in the Gulf of Mexico area.”

Currently, MacGregor offers a wide range of products for installation on offshore vessels and rigs. These include Hydramarine cranes and subsea load-handling solutions, Hydramarine rescue davit systems, and A-frames. MacGregor also supplies a broad range of Plimsoll winch systems for offshore oil exploration and production operations, as well as Nordstroms bulk-handling systems for offshore supply vessels.

Recently, MacGregor-Conver, the cargo-securing division of the MacGregor Group, introduced an automatic fixing cone designed to improve the safety of stevedores. The United States Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) had impending legislation that would prohibit stevedores from climbing on top of container stacks in U.S. ports. Stevedores had to climb on top of the container stacks to manually release twistlocks. MacGregor-Conver developed the automatic locks to secure cargo containers without the need for stevedores to climb onto the cargo containers.
