Hercules Offshore Inc., headquartered in Houston, Texas, is a global provider of offshore contract drilling, liftboat and inland barge services through their subsidiaries Hercules Offshore Drilling and Hercules Offshore Liftboats. Hercules Offshore focuses its operations in the Gulf of Mexico region, but also operates in Qatar, India, Saudi Arabia, and West Africa. Hercules Offshore had 2,200 employees as of December 31, 2009.

Hercules Offshore leads the U.S. Gulf of Mexico region with 25 offshore drilling rigs, 41 liftboats, and 17 inland barge drilling rigs capable of performing services including oil and gas exploration and development drilling, well service, platform inspection, maintenance and decommissioning operations in shallow-water markets.

Hercules Offshore, Inc. is listed on NASDAQ under the symbol “HERO”. The company reported weak second-quarter results in 2010, which were impacted by the delays in issuance of new drilling permits by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement. While shallow-water drilling has not been banned by the government, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement is undergoing a reorganization in the wake of the BP oil spill and has been slow to issue permits. Shares of the shallow-water driller company have fallen more than 40 percent since the Macondo well blew out, causing the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010.

The drilling and liftboat operations of Hercules Offshore are subject to perils of marine operations, including capsizing, grounding, collision, and loss or damage from severe weather. Tropical storms, hurricanes and other severe weather are especially prevalent in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

Offshore serves integrated energy companies, independent oil and natural gas operators, and national oil companies. Their business depends on the level of activity of oil and natural gas exploration, development and production in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. Hercules Offshore’s main competitors in jackup rig drilling are Transocean, ENSCO International, and Noble. Only ENSCO and Transocean have drilling presence in the Gulf of Mexico, which is Hercules Offshore’s primary focus.

In early 2010, the U.S. Department of Interior’s Minerals Management Service awarded the Hercules 253 the “Safety Award for Excellence Rig of the Year.”
