3. Port of San Francisco, California is located on the western edge of the San Francisco Bay near the Golden Gate, approximately 375 nautical miles from the Port of Los Angeles. The port is a semi-independent organization run by a Board of Commissioners consisting of 5 members appointed by the Mayor. The Port of San Francisco's Maritime Division manages and markets cruise and cargo shipping, ship repairs, fishing and a number of other maritime businesses and services in the harbor. In 2008, 53 cargo vessels carrying approximately 1.2 million tons of cargo were served by the Port of San Francisco. The San Francisco Port Commission is the port authority.
4. Port of Oakland, California lies on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay and is the fifth busiest container port in the U.S. It is an important transportation and distribution center for international cargo, and nearly 60% of the cargo traveling through the port is from Asia. The Port of Oakland served 1,928 cargo vessels in 2008 alone. It contains 20 deep-water ship berths and covers more than 300 hectares with its container terminals. The Port of Oakland Board Commissioners, which is comprised of 7 members appointed by the city council, has exclusive control of the port.
